Periodontal Maintenance
The Importance of Oral Hygiene
Periodontal disease is an infection of your gums, and if left untreated will gradually destroy your gums and supporting bone structure, causing you to lose your teeth. Gum disease is caused by bacteria trapped in plaque (a colorless film which sticks to your teeth). Plaque can be removed by daily brushing and flossing, but if not removed will harden into a rough substance known as calculus or tartar. The bacteria trapped in this plaque and tartar inflame and infect the gums to cause the infection that leads to gum disease. Common signs of gum disease include redness, swelling and easy bleeding of the gum. In later stages, you may also notice receding gums, loose teeth and other problems.
Factors that affect the health of your gums include:
- Smoking and other forms of tobacco use
- Diabetes
- Stress
- Bruxism (clenching and grinding teeth)
- Medical
- Poor nutrition
- Oral hygiene at home
Preventing Periodontal Disease
The best way to prevent gum disease is to brush and floss daily at home, and to continue visiting the dentist for professional cleanings and exams. This will allow the dentist to monitor your oral health and provide any treatments that you might need as quickly as possible.
Periodontal Maintenance
If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease and receive treatment, our dentist will also recommend periodontal maintenance to help keep the disease under control. Periodontal maintenance involves visiting our office regularly, usually every three months, for a deep dental cleaning. More frequent visits and additional treatments may be recommended as needed.
