Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide
Dentists have been using nitrous oxide or laughing gas for many years to help anxious patients relax during their dental appointments. If you could use some help relieving your anxiety, talk to our dentist, Dr. Rohini Singh, about using nitrous oxide in Killeen, Texas.
How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?
The nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and then it is inhaled through a mask placed over the nose. Within a few minutes of inhaling the gas, most patients begin to feel very calm or even giddy or euphoric (hence the name “laughing gas”). Nitrous oxide does not result in a loss of consciousness, and the effects only last as long as the gas is being inhaled. When the mask is removed, the patient is completely over the effect a few minutes later. The patient can drive themselves home after treatment and easily resume their normal activities
Is Nitrous Oxide Safe for Kids?
Yes, it is. In fact, many dentists find that they prefer using nitrous oxide when it comes to sedating children since it is safe and does not have any long-lasting aftereffects. You may discover that your child may not want to wear the mask over their nose. If your child needs to eat before their appointment, you may want to give them liquids or a very light meal to keep them from feeling any nausea.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Very few people experience any side effects from using nitrous oxide. In rare cases, usually if people have inhaled too much of the gas, they may experience headaches, nausea, fatigue or chills. If you have concerns, talk with Dr. Singh.
If you suffer from COPD or other breathing issues including emphysema, or if you live with multiple sclerosis, Dr. Singh may suggest another type of sedation. The gas may also not be effective if you have a cold or stuffy nose.
